Fetal survival following preeclamptic pregnancy has improved

Fetal survival following a preeclamptic pregnancy has improved substantially over the last 35 years in Norway, likely due to a reduction in stillbirths and improvements in clinical management, according to a study in the September 20 issue of JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Preeclampsia (a potentially dangerous condition that may develop in late pregnancy with symptoms that include high blood pressure, fluid retention, excessive weight gain, and the presence of protein in the urine) is a well-known cause of perinatal (occurring during the period around birth) death. Despite improvements in clinical management, preeclampsia often culminates in the delivery of a very preterm infant following medical intervention. Even mild preterm delivery substantially increases the risk of neonatal death.

A recent Florida Supreme Court ruling may allow certain cigarette smokers or their families to file individual monetary claims against tobacco companies. The key requirement is that the smoker must have had symptoms or was diagnosed with cancer (or some other serious disease) as a result of smoking cigarettes before Nov. 21, 1996.

Pensacola, FL (PRWEB) September 14, 2006 -- Tobacco companies must be furious. A recent ruling by the Florida Supreme Court (No. SC03-1856) is expected to incite a hailstorm of litigation from all over the Sunshine State.

Worrying won't harm baby

Women who feel anxious during pregnancy should not worry that their feelings will affect their babies, a new report suggests.

The report, a review of 50 studies, found no significant associations between feeling anxious and negative outcomes in pregnancy or birth.

There are hypothetical reasons to suspect that stress in pregnancy might harm the baby. Anxiety might lead to unhealthy behavior such as smoking or drinking alcohol, increase stress hormones that could limit uterine blood flow or cause changes in immunological function that could bring on preterm labor or the high blood pressure and excessive swelling of pre-eclampsia.

But the researchers found little evidence for any of these effects in the data from all the studies. Anxiety was not associated with any of the negative pregnancy outcomes examined: length of labor; birth weight; use of analgesia during labor, which can indicate great pain; gestational age at birth; or the Apgar score that rates the general health of a newborn.
