| Exclusive clinic to treat fibroids in Bangalore
BANGALORE: With over 25 per cent of women aged between 18 and 50 being affected by fibroids, an exclusive clinic to remove fibroids through laparoscopy will be opened here shortly. A team of surgeons led by Rakesh Sinha from Mumbai's Beams Hospital are working on the project. The clinic will either be linked to some top hospitals or will be set up separately. Similar clinics will be set up in Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Hyderabad, Dr. Sinha said. Reasons Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Dr. Sinha said most women developed fibroids in their uterus these days because of late marriage and childbirth, sedentary lifestyle or genetic problems. Besides the discomfort and pain associated with fibroids, the greatest trauma of having a fibroid was that it could hamper pregnancy and childbirth.
Crash survivor likely unaware of what happened
LEXINGTON, Ky. --James Polehinke, the sole survivor of Comair Flight 5191, might not realize that he was in a plane crash, a family friend said yesterday. "He doesn't even know about the accident," said Antonio Cruz, the boyfriend of Polehinke's mother, Honey Jackson. "He knows that he is in the hospital, and he knows he has to go through operations." Polehinke, the first officer, was at the controls when the plane took off from the wrong runway at Blue Grass Airport and crashed in a nearby field, killing 49 people Aug. 27. Study: Proteins sign of pregnancy complication Two proteins secreted by the placenta may be responsible for virtually all cases of pre-eclampsia, a severe complication of pregnancy that can be fatal to mother or baby, researchers report Thursday.
Scientists Crack Genetic Secrets Of Human Egg
Scientists at Michigan State University report this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that they have identified genes unique to the human egg. The identification opens the way to understanding these genes' functions, which may lead to solving problems from infertility to degenerative diseases. "What's in the egg to have that power?" asked Jose Cibelli, MSU professor of physiology and animal science. "Some of those genes are responsible for the magic trick that the egg has. This paper takes a peek at what genes are in the egg waiting to make these changes." Combined with sperm, the egg divides and organizes cells to ultimately create a human being. Combined with technology, the unfertilized egg might be coaxed to produce other specific cells, including stem cells, which can be directed to grow into new tissue.
