| ‘Silent killer’ as treatment for heart and lung disease
Carbon Monoxide (CO), a gas once dubbed the silent killer by the UKs health and safety executive, could provide a life-saving treatment for an incurable lung and heart condition, report researchers at Harvard Medical School, US. The researchers showed that CO can be used to reverse pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), which is caused by uncontrolled proliferation of the smooth muscle cells of the pulmonary arteries blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs. Uncontrolled proliferation remodels the blood vessels, thickening the blood vessel wall and blocking blood flow. This eventually causes fatal heart failure. .

Digestion is the process by which food is converted into substances that can be absorbed and used by the body. This process is accomplished by the digestive system's breakdown of foods into chemical compounds. Digestion begins as soon as food is put into the mouth and chewing begins. The esophagus carries food from the mouth to the stomach with muscular contractions. At the end of the esophagus, there is a muscle that acts as a valve by opening and allowing food to pass into the stomach, then contracting to keep stomach contents from flowing back, or refluxing, after swallowing. As part of the digestive process, the stomach secretes hydrochloric acid. In conjunction with other gastrointestinal secretions, stomach acids aid in the process of breaking food down for absorption.

RSL and the United Way have teamed up several times in the past for projects that have been beneficial for both parties and the "Day of Caring" reflects the continuation of the partnership between two entities committed to making a difference in the community. The Day of Caring took place last Thursday, September 7th and RSL was out at the event in full force.
