Sinusitis is one of the most common diseases in the United States. According to the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), it affects an estimate 37 million Americans each year. Along with asthma, allergies, and other upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis has increased dramatically. A 2000 study suggested that 66 million Americans report some type of sinus problem during the year. The causes for the increases in upper respiratory problems are under intense debate. However, a recent report in the March 2004 issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery suggests just the opposite that sinusitis may not be as common as previously reported and that accounts that rely solely on patient self-reporting may be exaggerated. Japanese celebrate male heir to throne
With shouts of "Banzai," Japanese celebrated the birth Wednesday of the imperial family's first male heir since the 1960s, a development that squelched hopes of reform to allow women on the throne. Princess Kiko, wife of Prince Akishino, gave birth to a boy by Caesarean section at a Tokyo hospital. The boy, who will be named Tuesday, is Emperor Akihito's first grandson and is third in the line to the throne, behind brothers Crown Prince Naruhito and Akishino. The news was cheered by many Japanese, who maintain an enduring respect for the imperial family more than 60 years after Emperor Hirohito renounced his status as a divinity at the end of World War II. Newspapers published extra editions, supporters gathered outside the hospital where the 39-year-old Kiko gave birth, and TV networks ran continuous coverage on the delivery.
Crash survivor likely unaware of what happened
LEXINGTON, Ky. --James Polehinke, the sole survivor of Comair Flight 5191, might not realize that he was in a plane crash, a family friend said yesterday. "He doesn't even know about the accident," said Antonio Cruz, the boyfriend of Polehinke's mother, Honey Jackson. "He knows that he is in the hospital, and he knows he has to go through operations." Polehinke, the first officer, was at the controls when the plane took off from the wrong runway at Blue Grass Airport and crashed in a nearby field, killing 49 people Aug. 27.
